Revolutionizing Workspace: Mastech Dongguan by Li-Yu Cheng

Transforming Office Spaces into Playgrounds for Enhanced Productivity

Mastech Dongguan, a franchise office of one of the world's largest suppliers of electronic measuring instruments, has been transformed into an innovative workspace that combines leisure, exercise, and work. The project, designed by Li-Yu Cheng, has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020.

The design of Mastech Dongguan is inspired by the company's corporate image of precision and professionalism. The office space widely adopts solid industrial loft style materials such as steel, glass, and marble. The formal conference room is divided into different kinds of meeting places, encouraging discussions to take place around every corner. The design aims to create an environment where clients and employees can engage in conversations while walking or exercising with ease.

The unique feature of this design is its attempt to combine leisure activity, exercising, and work, transforming the formal office into a playground for everyone. This innovative approach to workspace design is aimed at enhancing productivity and fostering a positive work environment. The office space also includes a running track and workout areas, further promoting the idea of combining work and leisure.

The project, which spans a construction area of 2255 square meters, started in January 2017 and was completed in April 2019. It is located in Dongguan city, Guangdong Province, China. The design team, led by Li-Yu Cheng and Yu-Chen Chen, focused on using a minimal amount of materials such as steel, glass, and artificial turf. The steel is used in the structure of the mezzanine, its neat straight line reinforcing the corporate image of profession and precision. The curved glass separates the meeting room from the workplace while maintaining transparency of the space. The artificial turf forms the running track and creates a relaxing sense while working.

The design faced the challenge of combining accuracy, precision, reliability, and a relaxed sense at the same time. To address high density of users, multiple business relations, and unknown meeting typologies, the workplace was designed to be open-plan and non-standard paradigm, to support any type of group talks. The reception area is compartmentalized by flooring plans, each area facing a different orientation to maintain privacy during business talks. The office desks are installed in the core area, surrounded by a loop of artificial turf running track, connecting every division and uniting working forces among peers.

Mastech Dongguan is a testament to the innovative approach to workspace design by Li-Yu Cheng. The project not only enhances productivity but also fosters a positive work environment. The design has been recognized for its outstanding expertise and innovation, earning it the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020.
